CAEN Receives the ”CMS Crystal Award of the year 2009” for its contribution in the realization of the CMS detector

GENEVA (Switzerland), March 16th, 2009. CAEN SpA, a market leader in the design, manufacturing and supplying of electronic instrumentation for Nuclear and High Energy Particle Physics Research, is proud to announce that the CMS Collaboration at CERN, the European Centre for Nuclear Research, near Geneva, Switzerland, has honoured the Company with the “CMS Crystal Award of the year 2009” for CAEN achievements in the realization of the contracts for the CMS detector.

The Award, presented in Geneva by Dan Green, CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) Collaboration Board Chairperson, acknowledges the close cooperation between CAEN (Costruzioni Apparecchiature Elettroniche Nucleari), INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) and CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in developing “high reliability Power Supply Systems” for the CMS detectors special designed to operate in hostile environments (Up to 2000 Gauss Magnetic Field resistant and radiation tolerant). This close collaboration has led CAEN to be one of the few manufacturers in the world of electronic systems working in a hostile environment. In particular it allowed CAEN to design and to provide modular Power Supply and Data Acquisition Systems to all four major LHC experiments, producing over 6,500 electronic units, containing more than 190,000 sub-boards. These electronic systems have been developed by CAEN using commercial-grade components instead of expensive radiation hard parts and using special components and design for the operation in magnetic field.

CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) is one of the four large CERN particle physics experiments built to explore the fundamental nature of matter and the basic forces which shape the universe. Many important discoveries in physics have been made by examining the high-energy collisions of subatomic particles such as protons and neutrons. In the CMS experiment, protons will collide at record energies up to 7 TeV (7 trillion electron volts) per proton provided by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The CMS experiment is one of the largest international scientific collaborations in history: more then 3000 scientists and engineers collaborate in CMS, coming from 183 institutes in 38 countries. The detector is 15 metres in diameter and weighs 12 500 tonnes. It is located in an underground cavern at Cessy in France, just across the border from Geneva. CAEN has delivered more than 2500 units to CMS project.

“CAEN is proud to receive the “CMS Crystal Award” for the achievements in the realisation of the contracts for the CMS Detector, including the modules powering the largest silicon detector ever build” said CAEN President and CEO Mr. Marcello Givoletti. This important acknowledgement is particularly satisfying because these unique systems were the result of concurrent engineering work, led by CAEN R&D development teams. This underlines the enormous effort, warm cooperation and excellent performance of CAEN products. “The CMS Award citation draws attention to the technical challenges that CAEN had to overcome and acknowledges the Company’s contribution to this major project” added Givoletti.
